Are you ready to try your hand at making a delicious traditional pasty? While we can't technically call it a Cornish Pasty since it's been baked in the Highlands, this recipe will surely satisfy your cravings for a hearty and flavorful meal.
Ingredients You'll Need
To make your own Highland pasty, you'll need the following ingredients:
For your pastry your pastry you will need...
- 300g Plain Flour
- 200g Strong Flour
- 120g Lard
- 125g Butter
- 175ml Cold Water
Make your pastry first so you can leave it chill/rest for about 30 minutes.
For your filling you will need...
- 400g of beef skirt or steak, diced
- 300g potatoes, peeled sliced and diced
- 150g onion, finely chopped
- 150g of swede, peeled and diced
- Copious amounts Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Follow these steps to create your own delicious Highland pasty:
- Preheat your oven to 165°C.
- Combine the diced beef, potatoes, onion, and swede in a bowl. Season with salt and pepper.
- Use a 20cm diameter plate to make 6 pastry discs.
- Place a generous amount of the filling onto one half of each pastry circle.
- Brush the edges of the pastry with beaten egg and fold over to enclose the filling, crimping the edges to seal.
- Make a small slit in the top of each pasty to allow steam to escape during baking.
- Place the pasties on a baking tray and bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes or until golden brown.
- Move onto a cooling rack and leave to cool as they will be piping HOT, then stand back and say 'proper job' and enjoy.
